PRODUCTS LOCATION HISTORY Jimmy's Ice Cream Home |
Jim Sweeney had been a baker on a ship in the service and worked in someone else's bakery before realizing his dream of owning his own bakery.   Jim and his wife Peg first opened the doors to Sweeney's Bakery back in 1957.   They started out making and selling cakes, breads, rolls, and danish.   Every single item made at Sweeney's has always been made from scratch.   There are never any mixes used.   Three generations of Sweeneys and their employees have upheld this tradition.   Although Sweeney's Bakery is a family run business, many of the employees that are not an official part of the Sweeney clan have worked there for at least twenty years themselves.   Over the years Sweeney's expanded their bakery to include a full line of delectable goodies.   Sweeney's offers upscale pastries such as strawberry squares and caramel apple mousse cake.   A full line of miniatures are available including éclairs, crème puffs and danish.   Sweeney's is known for its one-of-a-kind crueller.   Fifty to sixty dozen cruellers are made and consumed each day.   Specialty cookies for every holiday, like turkeys at Thanksgiving, and bunnies at Easter are always a treat with the children.   | |
| Sweeney's Bakery has also kept up with the times.   Any picture can be scanned and put on one of their famous butter creme iced cakes.   Any idea or theme can also be hand-drawn on a cake and turned into a one-of-a-kind creation.   Breakfast and lunch items including bagels and home-made soup can now be enjoyed in the sit-down area within the bakery.   James Sweeney currently starts his day baking at 3:30am.   Some of the local residents start arriving as early as 5:00am to enjoy his home-made baked goods.   As any regular patron will tell you, you need to get there early before all those delicious cruellers are gone.   In July of 2000, James Sweeney added yet another feature to the bakery.   He expanded the store to include a full ice-cream parlor which features Rainbow Ice Cream Creations.   The ice cream parlor is open in the evenings after the bakery itself closes for the day. | ||
| A Thank You Note to all of our loyal customers: Sweeney's has been a mainstay of the community and the Faulk & Naamans Shopping Center at Foulk and Naamans Roads since it first opened in 1957.   However, this 40+ year old bakery almost went out-of-business recently.   Due to many problems relating to the construction on Naamans Road and having to move the bakery from one end of the shopping center to the other, Sweeney's almost lost its lease.   The community and neighboring businesses rallied together and raised the $23000 Sweeney's needed to stay open.   People would come in and buy a dozen donuts and pay with a $100 bill.   They would tell the Sweeneys to "keep the change".   Many loyal customers gave freely to keep their favorite bakery afloat.   James Sweeney called these patrons "Sweeney's Angels". The entire Sweeney family is grateful to everyone in the community who helped keep their dream alive. |
