From a Different Perspective: Allentown 2003

This past August, we got to see a concert from a totally different perspective. Tony had gotten us some tickets to the Allentown State Fairgrounds. We showed up early with our last case of Girl Scout cookies of the year and found the guys at Sound Check. We got to watch a little of the practice from right up at the stage and then we were asked to go back to the control area and watch from there. Needless to say it was an incredible experience. We were shown the sound mixers, camera, and lighting equipment. We got to hear the band practice, with Tony singing lead, and watch how things were prepared for the show. We even got to hear the band practice the instrumentals for Alan's soon to be released single "Remember When". How beautiful it sounded. Later, the guys in the control booth said it would be ok for us to watch the actual concert from up there as long as we didn't jump around too much. We were really excited to take them up on this offer. Matthew, my twelve year old son who desperately wants to be a performer some day, got to learn a lot about what goes on behind the scenes. Bailey on the main camera showed us some things and told us that his crew is responsible for the videos we see each show for Where I Come From. What a great job they do on that one. Jimbo on lights, showed us how colors were mixed and lights were moved around. He let Rachel actually move the lights and change the colors of the lights while the band was setting up after Joe Nichols performed. He also let Matt program in some of the colors that show up on the screen behind Alan on Gone Crazy. When Alan finally came out, we got to see his entire show from the crew's perspective. Although we were about 20 or so rows back from the stage, it was an experience we never would have missed for the world. The people behind the scenes are so talented. They make it seem so effortless. They help make the whole production a success. They were a great bunch of guys and we truly appreciate the experience they shared with us. We did ask Bailey ahead of time if it was ok for Rachel to stand up with her Bitty Baby during Little Bitty. He said of course, so we did manage to get her up on the screen during the chorus. We also saw that the crew up there likes to imitate the little boy on Drive when he pulls back his arm as the chorus starts. After the show was finally over the guys gave us three song lists and a memory that will last forever in our minds.
