Review: Chula Vista, CA 2003
Oh my GOSH! ALan just talked to me on the cell phone! Paul held up the phone during Mercury Blues and Alan took it! I can't BELIEVE IT! All of a sudden I hear this deep voice ... I think he said something like "hey out there how ya doing?" or maybe it was "Hey out there this is Alan". It was really really hard to hear cause the phone missed like every other second and everyone was screaming etc......but it was him!!!!!!!!! TOO TOO COOL!!!!!!!!

Well, you all know how the end of the evening went. Here is the rest of it: Both Joe Nichols and Phil Vassar opened for Alan. Joe's set was pretty much the same as in Daytona, he did acknowledge this time when he sang Farewell Party that Alan also sings it. Paul says Phil was very good, I didnt hear that show, and he played for almost an hour I think is what he said. The lights went out and then there was nothing for a couple minutes before Alan finally appeared. Paul says Alan was wearing a light tanish shirt with brown trim/fringe? (Remember this description is coming from a guy so don't bet your life on it haha). He opened with Gone Country. Paul says they showed a shot of his KNEEE on the big screen. He sang most of his usual set, including an unplugged portion with Man of Constant Sorrow. I noticed (since I was listening and not watching) that he is now announcing his band members in reverse order. He used to start with the guys on his left and go around to his right. Now he starts over on the right with Dan Kelly and goes the other way.......just a tidbit for those of you who go to his shows often......Anyway I thought the show was great from what I could hear. The most clear song I heard was DRIVE.....I heard just about every note and I sang along with it in my kitchen while making up some snacks for the kids lunches. Here is the songlist as I tried to write each one down: Gone Country, Tooth, Trees, Livin on Love, Work in Progress, Who's Cheatin Who, When Somebody Loves You, WWW., LITTLE BITTY, Gone Crazy, Jukebox ....then he took a break to introduce the band. Then onto Man of Constant Sorrow, Summertime Blues, That'd be Alright, Blues Man, PopaTop, Drive, Chattahoochee, Where I Come From, Where Were You, and the famous encore of Mercury Blues. I can't wait to get the shirt that Alan signed. It's about time I got something for ME and not my kids dont you think?? I will ask Paul if he has any more details.....oh yea one thing I remember is that he said he was standing almost the whole show so I guess a lot of people were on their feet!
